Do you like tube phono preamps?

I think a phono pre, with the massive gain required, is the worst place to have vacuum tubes. My personal belief is that (repurposed microphone) transformer gain stages were made popular due to the noise level of tube preamps back in the day. Transformers also have their own distortions...

Anyway, just my opinion.

My homemade EAR 834 knockoff is pretty noisy, but it blows that TCC phono preamp out of the water.

Yep all kinds of junk tube amps with cheap tube buffers, not that there’s anything wrong with that, these amps are cheap enough to buy. One of these with an AT-LP120, a Lepai 2020, and some thrift store Polk/Mission/Boston/Audioengine bookshelf speakers would be great.

I mean it’s not Altec/WOPL/Carver/Krell/JBL/Klipschhorn/Counterpoint/Acurus like we’re used to but it’s cheap!
