Aren't most of the 630's related?

And why just this one transistor type? Sounds halfway anal to me.

What sort of elfin mayhem could them critters render?

I think I have a 635D. I have to look. The case is easy to get into. Mine has intermittent Reverse. It does it one one side all the time ; but the other direction it only does it some times.

I think you'd want to look at the arms.

The general opinion is that the 2SC458 can become noisy over time. I've read that mentioned with Akai and Sony decks, I believe. One replacement to consider is the 2SC2240, but there may be others just as worthwhile.
Good luck with the mod...!

LOL Heck no. The arms are fine. If not it wouldn't do anything. The reason you use metal tape on the R2R is the sensor. As the tape goes over it it reverses the tape.
