Apparently what I've got is from down in the Rec Center of the complex, not to far away...but this is a very sturdy concrete and steel girder building built in 1960, and the signal comes and goes here in my place, out in the stairwell it's just fine, but many undesirable folks live here and I don't want to get robbed/raped for this laptop being out there.

Are there signal amps I could use to bring in the signal more consistantly since I seem to be on the edge of keeping it intact? Or just save up for a hi speed plan to bundle with my home phone. I'm cheap and would like to save the $30/mth for cable, tho I'm sure it's only $30 for the 1st 6 mths, then they zing ya for $60+ later on, bastids!!!

Depending on the direction of the access points downstairs, you might be able to get away with one of these adapters from Hawking Tech

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...4 50002010&IsNodeId=1&name=Hawking Technology

The bottom two are directional antennas. I remember buying one for my sister so she could get internet from her neighbor across the street (a friend of hers, so it's all "good"). It worked rather well. She probably still has it, but I dunno.. you might be better off seeing about getting one to try.

If the antenna unscrews see if you can find a post screw that you can attach a coaxial cable to and extend it to the window so it can be hidden.

Something shielded that can be moved.

Remember! Using another's account is bad news simply because aside from porn and such registering from that person's router IP you could take them over their bandwidth plan's limits and the ISP would go looking for the point of signal usage. If you want to keep your privacy. get your own signal and ENCRYPT, set security proper with a passwor chosen and complex enough to have some security functionality to it. Otherwise people can see you password more easily based of 'password' or a well known password people use.

Have you checked into Direct for TV? They are running a $29.99 per month for 2 years then you can cancel. they have other plans also that cost more with more shows.
