This is a discussion about different systems. What do you guys look for in systems. Do you want loud? Do you want defined? Can you have both?

I'm not picking on anyone. I'm just trying to get a perspective here. I have friends who spend 3000.00 for a cart. They also listen to mono LPs. I have more than one system as you guys know. Every system I own has different attributes. I still jam just in a different way. When I was younger I had towers that would rock. I have even built some 2 ways that sounded very good and received a visit from the police; because they could hear it 3 blocks away. I was rattling the windows. At that time I was running a Hafler system. I think listening to Macintosh gear in my younger days did some thing to me. I would sit there just amazed at the sound. I tried to finance a system. LOL Making 395.00 a month while in the USAF. They laughed at me. I think it was 13,000.00 total. I would still be paying on it.

What is your ultimate goal for a system. I do have a PL that has been modded. Not White Oak modded. It does have some goodies though. It measured 525 WPC. I haven't even had it half way on my pre yet. I like the definition the wattage gives me at lower levels. Jerry is coming so we shall listen to mine compared to his. Then I will make a decision I have been putting off. Jerrys input will help me in that decision.

We all have different likes and listening pleasures. There are no wrong discussions in this thread.

I've been trying to figure out where I want to go with a system. There a lot of things about my tastes that point me to concider things like Audio Note kits as a future possibility. I don't feel that big power is anywhere I need to be. I had a few decent big amps that were pretty nice. This PS Audio 200C, Nakamichi PA-7 (threshold/stasis design), Adcom 555. But I've never been happier then I have been with this Jolida integrated. Really I can play whatever I want with it in this small room with the big Snells.

I'm often captivated by voices, intruments, jazz and classical. If I happen to be in the mood for some heavy beats, dub-step, rap, electronica, whatever, I get all the power in Bass that I need. I can rock out, I can chill.

The old Nak amp I had in the past was part of a complete Nak stack with some smaller Maggies. Although it was nice, I longed for the excitement I got out of more standard dynamic drivers. I had run though various lower priced Boston Acoustics, B&W and even some Dalquist DQ10's prior to the Magnepans. Never really had the dough for a big set of decent towers.

Now that I am back into it, after about a 10year hiatus, I finally got these big Snell CIV's, and I've really enjoyed them. But I'm always on the lookout for something more refined. I'm less concerned about pinpoint imagining, and more concerned about a pleasing and non-fatiguing tonal balance. Near wall/corner placement would be a plus. However, no matter how I slice it, the alternatives I usually look for are way beyond my reach when it comes to price.

So I guess the ultimate would be to go with a system that is completely built by myself that would I would like enough to keep permanently so that I can spend the rest of the time just buying and enjoying music. Always wanted to build, mainly speakers, but building it all seems exciting to me.

Building a couple of systems at the moment. Pretty right for front end stuff but amplification/speakers still work to do

Currently running a 15wpc Class A single ended valve amp into Lenehan ML1 Ultra's but the speakers really need more power to open them right up.

Part way into building a pair of Transend audio Beast 180W OTL amps to suit the ML1's

Second system will be more refined and hopefully the last system I will ever need. Amp under construction is a home built 3.5W class A single ended amp using 1930's RCA 50 Triodes. Speakers will be Supravox 215-2000-EXC 8" field coils full range drivers on JE Labs open baffles.

My favorite amp is still WLW's old 500kW transmitter.

So you are going to try or have you already tried open baffles. I have never heard a pair. I have read about them. What freq. range would you have and what efficiency?

Now that I have the TV lines restablished in both ends and most of the stereo/video in the bedroom I can get the stereo in here back together.

Sure feels a lot better.

Pondering a system approach is difficult, or at least I am out of practice. My home system has a history of changes towards something, but I couldn't tell you what it was. My system at work however has a purpose. I need to hear the equipment I repair. It needs to be bomb proof. I need tone controls and a mono button.
In our consignment area I've been setting up systems based on what is on hand, what speakers will sound good on which wall. I use criteria like looks and function over price, so the systems get to be pretty wild. The 2 big systems now are Yamaha C65/M80 with Boston Acoustics A100s and a funny Garrard turntable (we just sold our good Dual) The other system is a Denon DAP-2500 pre, Yamaha M70, Adcom GFT 555 tuner, a goofy Onkyo CD, and Large Advents.
My favorite system though is a Sony TA3650 integrated with a Philips DVD Q50, and whatever speakers of the day are, which today are Advent Legacies. The magic is the combination of the unhearalded Philips and a old Sony silverface that is not known for any special sonics. That is the magic of a system, when the pieces sound better together than they do individually.

Hi Larry,
Have not tried the open baffle speakers yet but the drivers I have are suitable and are flat from 50Hz to 17000Hz. This should be very interesting as there are no boxes and no cross overs.
Cheers
