Are the 2N1304 2N1305 Transistor set a "must have" for the Phase Linear 400 and 700 amps, or are there alternatives to these now obsolete transistors? I probably want to have a couple of sets put aside for the future, if they are a "must have" item and obviously they are eventually going to be tougher to find and more expensive...

Lee and I have several sets, we can send you some whenever you need them.
Some people remove them but the design is sound and Joe kept them in his upgraded board. I believe this is one of the things that PL did right.

Yep it is. They are not obslete and they can be purchased new from Solid State Inc. They are a manufacturer and rig up and run these once a year or so. The last price I had quoted was for 200 pieces of each and they were 2.80 for the 1304's and 1.45 for the 1305's. I hace several hundred pairs and when i get down to a hundred or so i'll call for a group buy and see what kind of break i can get fo more than 200 pair.

That was mentioned as a factor for when they run the 1304's. They make 1305's every dayall day, but the 1304'ds were run when they could get raw material.

The 2N1305 and PNP germanium devices in general are easier to fabricate than NPN germanium devices due to some of the properties of germanium. That is why you find the PNP 2N1305 to be in more ample supply at lower costs. The use of silicon made it possible to produce low leakage, low cost NPN devices which eventually caused the demise of germanium in general transistor production.
