That's $3.93 each shipped, you can't buy the tape let alone boxes for that cheap

These are all old Lee so I am assuming Ampex (I see that on a few boxes and another says Stereotape a division of Magtec???)

Not sure what grade, whatever they used for the factory recorded offerings

Might be Scotch 206, or 207 too. I had some from that era that were Scotch....

I would not dare tape over any of these, it's all from many of my favorites of the sixties and seventies.

I just bought Streisand Superman from Shotwell this month as well as another Al Hirt album. I also love Ferrante and Teicher's music.

The other important thing to point out is that most of the albums aren't much longer than 30-45 minutes long and even at 3.75 ips that isn't really that much tape. Recording at 1.875 (1 7/8) ips will yield only voice grade fidelity, if your deck even supports that speed...cassettes had a lot of improvements to make between their introduction in 1963 as dictation aids to full fidelity music recording medium.

So 3 3/4 reels aren't going to give you mixtape reels of any decent length, and you wouldn't probably want to erase them if you liked the music.

And they are all around 40 to 55 years old. Dropouts, which can occur from normal wear and tear, are permanent, regardless of what is recorded over the original program.

And to answer Lee's question, there were many sources for American reel releases. Ampex, Bell and Howell, several others duplicated for the industry for some time. It took some time and 8 tracks and cassettes for tape production to finally become an in-house operation. Most of the label's own factory production was probably done by CBS and Capitol-EMI until the last ten years of production. Even so, again mostly Capitol-EMI had their own tape formulas and I think CBS may have imported some of their CASSETTE stock into the eighties as Sony was partnered with CBS for well over 20 years *1965 in Asia before they finally bought the CBS Records labels.

I'm not sure if Agfa or BASF tape played any large part in US production but Capitol-EMI was well known for it's work on gamma-ferric formulations, especially for it's XDR cassette titles.

We don't have Wilhelm of TH to tell us here but reading his posts helps a lot. We do have Des-Lab. Matt is around here somewhere usually.

Steven, some of these reels are almost packed to the end and weigh a ton, some are not so time varies I suppose

Either way, I will mark these down to $40 shipped (US only) or in the dumpster they go. I do not have the storage space, I am trying to empty stuff out, not pile it up

There should be no dropouts with these, I doubt they were played much looking at them. The factory header stickers and reels are clean

Well, I wouldn't toss them. Even if you get no other interest I would buy them next month. My grandparents played a lot of these artists in their home and I always loved Streisand...this is music I love and don't have. I have to turn to Mike Shotwell otherwise.

They would also sell well on eBay individually. You would have a strong market there.
