Was running the Blackgates that Larrt sent for the 700. ESR was 0.00, checked my meter, put in a new battery, rezeroed meter, still read the same. Checked it on a .33 ohm resistor, read .25, tried a .27 ohm resistor--read .19, tried a .22 ohm resistor-read .14, consistently reads .08 ohm low. Does that mean my ESR wasa really .08??

Lee,

That seems awfully good. I'm sure you've done this with other caps - how do those comapre?

I can test a Nichicon KZ 470uF 50V electrolytic with a new piece of test equipment that I bought for work. It's a BK Precision Model 889B Bench LCR/ESR Meter with Component Tester. What frequency does your meter check the ESR at? I've dorked around with the 889B and the ESR results vary over frequency. For reference I've included a link to this gear:

http://www.bkprecision.com/products/com ... ester.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have some testing going on in the AM at work so if I don't get kicked out of the forum trying to post (work firewall and such) I'll send my results tomorrow in the early afternoon - otherwise it will be in the evening.

Cool stuff though!

Cool, 100khz Dennis. I measured one of the KZ muse 470 uf's at 50 volt and it was the same.

Lee you need a meter with a Kelvin (4 wire) connection to get decent accuracy and repeatable measurements for low ESR readings
My LCR meter gets the following on a 470 uF 25V KZ Muse cap (2 samples)
100 Hz = 0.113 ohms
1KHz = 0.041 ohms
10KHz = 0.033 ohms

Hey Joe,

Oh wait - that kinda sounds like a song title.

Did you average your measurements of the two caps?

Yeah - the four wire system is the way to go in my opinion also. We used a two prong SMT meter for the last two or so years and it sucked. The measurement repeatability and accuracy were questionable. The meter finally died so it opened up an opportunity to get something better. I did some research and came up with the BK Precision 889A. A little pricy for home use but for work it has worked out well.

I'm glad you got me involved in this forum - it's made me think a lot more about the fundamental side of electronics as I've tended more towards a system (and management) level for the past 15 years or so.

This is way too much fun - have I ever mentioned that I like test equipment?

Dennis

The least significant digit was flickering between the reading I posted and the adjacent bit and was the same deal on both caps (they are really quite consistent) so I picked the reading that was most persistent to post.

Lee
The ESR will decrease with frequency up to the self resonant point at which point it will generally start climbing again (at that point you are really starting to measure the self inductance of the cap)
The self resonant point on most good caps is quite a ways up there in frequency. There is that old electronics saying "every microfarad has its own nanohenry"

Must be old, I've never heard it, course when it comes to board level stuff, I'm a noob!!
