As an amateur teen smoker, I was more "exploring" different brands like Dunhill, Rothmans and others. Later at high school we were smoking Lucky Strike, Winston 100s, French well known Gauloises and Gitanes both with and without filter and some others :) In that time Marlboro was about 25...

    What are you drinking?

Just came home after the "hard working day" and a walker was waiting for me. Not Johnnie from Scotland but James from London :) Introduced a bottle of tonic to him :) Seems that it's gonna be a nice easy evening.

    Calibrating a deck recording

And that's the answer I was looking for! Another weekend - another knowledge :) Thanx! I know which one you was meaning, I have 34 of XLII-S, just mentioned that I've recently bought couple of XLII in a black shell/green wrap. Don't know how good they are, but a price was OK. *still can't...

    Calibrating a deck recording

OK, so generally the one should (but not necessarily) use a tape which have a flat FR, obviously ferric. If I understand correctly, type I cassettes requires the least bias. Then why set external bias pots in the middle? That way there is a limited amount of positive bias to add and it can be...

    Calibrating a deck recording

XLII-S is one of my favs but didn't tested yet to record one on my newly adjusted decks. Good that you Vince pointed that XLII-S one is one of those which needs more bias. Generally, is it so that all chrome tapes need more bias than normal ones? How about a metal tapes, are they closer to...

    Calibrating a deck recording

The one I'm talking about is RS-B965 which is I believe from '90. or '91. I think somebody wrote somewhere that Technics and some other Japanese decks are adjusted with TDK tapes. How good was TDK tapes from that era is something else. I wasn't even thinking about that you said "... as the year...

    Calibrating a deck recording

And that's exactly where I don't want to go :) I was curious it there are some tapes that are more "in the middle" and better for BIAS adjustment. As an amateur, I have so far learned myself that ferric tapes are more flat and needs less bias, while chrome needs more bias. Didn't tested metal...

    Calibrating a deck recording

My decks are finally serviced and adjusted but there is one thing I'm curious about. I have tried to adjust BIAS using Maxell UDII-90CD (the one with a clear shell) and TDK SA60 from 82-83. It didn't worked well because... no matter. Another Phoenix member which I appreciate a lot told me to try...

    Cassette lovers; why?

Never seen those tapes before but they should be good. 100€ is not a little money but unfortunately tape prices in Europe are high. Our friends at the other side of the ocean have a better luck. Cassettes in US are cheaper and much easier to find. Regarding a lenght, 100 minutes should be fine...

Hard to tell if a quality of that Houston tape is good. Somebody should test it. Since that it's not available here in Europe, everything is on you guys in US.

    Cassette lovers; why?

As many of you, I've left a tapes behind me a many years ago. Then I found somewhere a Technics RS-AZ7 (really nothing special regarding a sound and a junk regarding a build quality) which I bougt for cheap without any special reason (maybe looking nice). Then I discovered some web pages about...

Simple question (for the one who knows)

Those Pb gain trimpots are way too sensitive :) Got it to about 385-391mV and peaks are still at +2. Adjusted R67/R68 (now trimpots) to 78K and it's there, exactly at +3 (Dolby mark). Will order fixed 78K next time, until then trimpots will do a job.

Simple question (for the one who knows)

You probably have right about rising dolby level a bit but one thong I'm not sure (actually lot of things but in this case only one): Should it be as close as possible to 388mV but not over 388 OR as close as possible to 388mV while some mV +/- is accepted?
