Haven't done much to with this lately. The Microscan calibrates nicely to TDK D and SA tapes, but fails on the metal MA due to low output to the Microscan board, Clearly have a level issue with the tape selector switched to metal. Was a good point to take a break from this. Just got around to...

    what are you listening to?

Hey Gene! Been listening to FM and some Walkabouts while I work on kitchen renovation.

Anyone understands how calibration is working?

Depends on what unit your working on. For example the Phase Linear deck has two oscillators, a 400 Hz and 10 kHz. The oscillators frequency amplitudes are adjusted with trimmers. 400 Hz to -3.7 dBV (653mv). 10 kHz to -18.7 dBV (116mv). The scan board needs to be put into test mode with shorting...

Restored Pioneer SA 9500 static noise

Bad ground somewhere, perhaps a missing screw, or perhaps it's in the headphone jack,

    My PL400 Series 1 Rebuild

My understanding that the "click" is the relay opening and ungrounding the amps output. I've never put a ohm meter across the circuit to check this, however. The guys who repair these would know for sure. My three units have been trouble free so I've never investigated. I did have one relay that...

    PL7000S2

Raised the head height with a hard paper shim. Had some erratic high frequency distortion on the right channel and a somewhat lower signal amplitude. All fixed with the shim. Read that it's common for Pioneer heads to be mounted slightly low. Sure was the case here with the replacement head...

So here's the Playback EQ FR I'm going to run with for now. A +3.5 dBV peak at 2 kHz. Read somewhere that being within a 5 dBV variance is good. I don't know. I'll revisit this later. Thanks to whoever made the Exel program, can't recall where I found it.

Making progress. Using a 7 decade resistor substitution box to dial in the playback head parallel LCR circuit damping. I'm finally understanding a little about how to match heads to the deck. Problem is magnetic heads aren't ideal inductors and the on-line calculators give poor results. Very...

Trouble with a PL 5100 series II

Hard to say. The issue could be anywhere in the chain. Ideally you'd input the signal at the antenna connection with a RF Generator and start probing the signal path from there. Could be anything from a bad connection, cracked resistor, transistor, cap, etc. There's also a possibility someone's...

Trouble with a PL 5100 series II

Listening to mine now. Mine worked fine when I got it from a pawn shop. Went ahead and recapped it anyways because I wanted it to be good for decades to come. Didn't find any bad caps. I did the alignment, and it was spot on. One thing about it, a single FM antenna feeds it and the earlier PL...

Right on. These are the first I've changed. Got the old ones out and new put in. Hooked up the gear, and the old Lenovo T410 laptop died. Updating a fresh Windows install on a old work station as a replacement.

Testing some styrene caps. The deck came with 100 pF parallel to the playback head, while the schematic calls for 220 pF. Calculations call for a 330 pF. These melt easily while soldering or desoldering,
