    Speakers

thats true as every speaker ever made represents its own set of compromises. i thought it was interesting because he was extensively critical about the shortcomings of boxes and barely addressed the shortcomings of alternative designs.

    Speakers

horns for high spl's and also for dynamics. i like the guy's opinion on enclosures... basically that boxes do all kinds of bad things to the sound, but when he designs his own speaker project what does he do but put the drivers in a box.

    Replacing foam surrounds

well fwiw, my first surround replacement job was on some large advent's and i didnt shim them. never any issues as a result, but it takes a bit of luck to get them right. shimming takes all the guesswork out of the procedure and i wouldnt replace surrounds any other way.

    Being Objective

while the most important aspect for me is enjoying the music, i'll freely admit to being a gear-head with a fetish for big speakers and amps, so i do listen to the gear as well. in regards to wire, after having done my own non-scientific testing, i dont really care to listen to this cable or...

    Cost VS Performance

re: the Oppo. keep in mind that my recommendation was based on its ability as a universal player, ie; sacd, dvd-a, ntsc and pal dvd, and blu-ray formats. i havent even tried it for cd playback, much less compared it to other cd players.... glad you are enjoying yours Larry.

if you are burning cd's then you are not using a file compression format like flac, mp3 etc. if you are writing cd's as data disks, then you could use compression (just like you could if you were were using the hard drive as data storage), but those disks wouldnt play in a standard cd player.

    MP3 to flac

are you burning cd's or ripping digital files that play from the hard drive? if its from the hard drive i would guess that Nero is making .wav files. if you look at the disk space of the .wav files you'll quickly appreciate what something like flac will do. saves a lot of space (even when you...

    MP3 to flac

yep, MP3 is lossy so converting it to a lossless format like flac gains nothing. whatever your source material, keep the digitized conversions in lossless format. afaik, which lossless format doesnt matter beyond what your player will work with.

    Blu-Ray what are you running

internal dac on the Oppo is very good, Cirrus CS4398 for stereo and Cirrus CS4382A for multi-channel. its much better than whats in my receiver, so i use the 5.1 analog outputs of the Oppo rather than let the receiver process the signal.

    Blu-Ray what are you running

i went with the Oppo BDP-83 because its a universal player and is PAL format compatible. plays everything i've ever thrown at it.
