And, I soldered the Dolby Level test leads to the wrong pins. Doh!!! I'd starve if I had to do this or anything like this for a living!. I'll get those leads moved from pin #2 to #15 and retest. The PL7000 service manual appears to be correct for setting Dolby Level, but I want to verify it by...

The heads are junk. Ran the 315 Hz tone at -20 dB on the QA403. The 10 kHz tone is at -35 dB on the left channel, -38 dB on the right. So the left channel is down 15 dB, the right is down 18 dB. Going to do some more reading and start looking for heads.

    what are you listening to?

Saw three bands at Blossom last night. Girlfriends, a California band. Simple Plan, out of Montreal Quebec. Avril Lavigne, from right across the lake in Ontario Canada. It rained the whole show, was sold out, 20,000 people. Everybody partied hard in the rain and had a good time. A really good show.

Took it apart again to check a few things, solder test leads on the Dolby chips, etc, before I start the alignment over. Have a issue with low output at Playback EQ test points at higher frequencies, no problem with low frequencies. Probably the heads, but could be the playback amp or a prior...

Playing the HPR test tapes into the QA-403 to actually see what's on them. This is working excellent. It's all rather confusing with the different levels and tapes, but I'm starting to get a handle on it. I did print out English translations of the German language stickers on the tapes...

Yup. Seems what your experiencing is a very common occurrence with the old parts. PL went through many revisions trying to get it right. Some revisions were to make it better, some were cost cutting. Gene, a long time member here, has brought many 400 Series 1 amps back to working status using...

Got the Leader analog millivoltmeter. On the inside, looks as clean as the day it was made. Cleaned the outside some. Got all the old stickers and tape off it. Polished the meter window with a antistatic dryer sheet. Both channels are dead on accurate with the HP function generator and four...

At the point where the precision of the Fluke 8920A digital meters is a hindrance. Look at the right hand Fluke measuring the Record Dolby test point. Knew this was point was coming so I have a Leader LMV-185A dual channel analog meter on the way. Hopefully it's averaging function will allow a...

    TV LG or Samsung ?

Thanks Chris, a VERY interesting video. I've fixed several monitors and TV's over the years with bad caps on the power supply. There have been a few I couldn't revive, and I remember having my finger on that tan component while tracing power.

Alice Cooper at Blossom. He's doing it right by opening with the oldest hits and progressing to the newest. Fantastic band and theatrics. Rob Zombie is up next as the headliner.

    Phase Linear 2000 recap question

There were several variations of components on the 2000 Series 1 boards, component variations are noted on the schematic on page #8. The one Series 1 unit I have appears to be a late production unit with the "Export" dual primary transformer and dual pot balance control. Different than the...

The original plastic RCA jacks are oxidized and are junk. A clean alignment signal through them is problematic even after cleaning. Going to make a adapter plate and install Switch Craft jacks. Rear of the chassis comes off with zero desoldering. Also need to file some screwdriver pry slots in...

    Phase Linear 700B

Everything in the amp is suspect due to age. All caps need replaced, all other components need tested. Many resistors are probably drifted and small signal transistors are noisy. Many of us don't even plug these in when we buy them. We gut them and rebuild with White Oak Audio components...

Transport is working very well. The mirror cassette worked great for setting the tape guide located on the left pinch roller I'm in the alignment procedures for setting Dolby Playback Adjustment. Couple test points are buried deep on the motherboard, so partially disassembled it for the upteenth...

Not a different face plate. One has a face plate, the other is missing it's face plate.

    PHASE LINEAR 400 S2 MAYBE ?

Same model amp. One with the face plate, and one without. The first amp I bought was being used as a guitar amp by the seller. Doesn't matter, it's a stereo amp regardless.

Got the pinch rollers back from Terry. Appears the new rubber is vulcanized onto the original brass bushing and then machined. The original rubbers were a press fit.
