So I need a additional tape to properly set the Playback EQ, A Pioneer STD341A equivalent has been ordered from Genlabs. I'll resume once I get the tape. Everything is looking very good after the resistor swap.

That's my understanding Jim. Commercially recorded tapes are recorded with a specific EQ. Therefore those tapes should play correctly on all decks that have a correctly aligned Playback EQ section. In my case, the Playback EQ is out of spec due to the head swap. I'm missing hitting my targets...

A little more tweaking of the Playback and Record EQ trimmers last night got me this. The treble on the D falls off at 17K, the MA-X at 20K. This may look acceptable, but it's not. The Playback EQ trimmers are maxed out and the 10K and 14K levels are low, missing the target. These are adjusted...

The QA40X software, which is a free download, has a w+f meter , but they haven't finished it. It works, but has no weighting options. They're in the middle of rewriting all the software to make the units more compatable with other software that the pros use. Hopefully they'll sell more units...

Yeah Chris, eventually w+f, noise, distortion, etc. I do like REW. Used it to set up the MiniDsp active crossover in the main system. It's very cool how the REW measurements drop directly into the MiniDsp software and REW is configured to use the MiniDsp USB microphones.

Finished the initial alignment. Fortunately the Microscan board appears to be good as I can see the comparator switching on, off, on. I do have EQ issues that further alignment may or may not resolve. Here's the first frequency response taken at the decks output jacks This is a automated test...

Back up and running. Clutch is good, Issue was a slipping drive tire. Cleaned the old original glaze off the reel drive hubs and drive. Adjusted the DC motor drive. Ran the mirror cassette, and the cut-away cassette. Been monitoring VDC at the reel motor on a Fluke and frequency of the direct...

    PL7000S2

Yup, but too much $ for what I'm doing. At this point though, I'm definitely considering getting one. There was a cheap used one on eBay a couple months back. But the photo showed one of the spring ends had been pulled loose and poorly reattached. Got the transport ready to drop back in. I now...

Yeah, I copied Nick's work, a excellent design.

So I'm finding some transport issues. Pulled the opto sensor off the board, cleaned the lenses, reinstalled. Appears fixed. Having a additional issue with one blank test tape type, TDK SA 90. The take-up reel clutch is occasionally slipping on this one type. The cassettes appear good with no...

The tape counters opto sensor is corrupted by the bench lights. Spent 2 hours chasing unstable voltage to the DC motor, narrowed it to the sensor and rotating vanes. Shielded it with a piece of paper, got stable motor voltage. Rock solid voltage at the DC motor and a better operating transport...

I've been looking for another complete set of original transport plastics to use for replication. The reels drive pulley and clutch, drums, pulleys, hex drive, etc. I've seen a few transports pop up for sale occasionally. Once I get another, I'll pursue this. I really need a working unit and...

Thanks guys. That's something I'll pursue in the future.

Units are glued up. The hex driver body and cap are glued on the shaft, the spring loaded driver slides freely. Wish I'd caught the cracks earlier. The adhesive I'd added earlier to the drums and pulleys looks good. Maybe someday it'll be easy to replicate the parts.

Transport developed a issue with right reel lagging and sometimes stopping. Cracks in the black hex drivers that engage the tape reels, the shaft spins inside the driver. I'll glue these to the shaft for now, and look for some replacement pieces.

If clearance is a issue, maybe a nice rubber grommet to hold a LED. It'll be interesting to see what you do with the internal lighting. Not sure if there's a WOAD LED light board for that early model.

Here's the idea and part#'s I used. My amps are Series 2 with Joe's awesome Meter Boards. https://forums.phxaudiotape.com/threads/leds-in-place-of-attenuators.10756/

    PL700 Rebuild

I use SwitchCraft RCA's and solder the ground tabs shoulder directly to the copper plate with a Heavy Duty Weller soldering gun. No attenuators or anything else between the RCA and control board other then Belden 83284 mil-spec coax. I've replaced the volume attenuators with red LED lamps.

The 700 Pro came direct coupled with no switch. The resistors were those big gold heat sinked Dales attached to the chassis with screws. I don't remember any caps or else. Usual standard copper plate and fiber washers. They came with 1/4" input jacks easily replaced with a RCA.

What would you pay for a decent but basic speaker cable?

No IEC power grounds on my components other than at the preamp and the preamp power supply, even though every piece does have a IEC socket installed. The IEC power grounds aren't connected in the four amps, MiniDsp, tuners, turntable, etc. Everything is grounded to each other through the...
