Removed Guts From An Early 1960's HiFi Console

The 50's were the heyday for German radios. All sorts of bells and whistles - competition was fierce. 3D sound was big (think Bose with direct and reflecting sources) and they were putting more and more speakers in the cabinets - and this was before stereo - 6 speakers in some cases - 2...

Removed Guts From An Early 1960's HiFi Console

I've worked on similar radios/stereos out of Germany - Saba (top of the line), Telefunken, Grundig, Siemens, AEG. This one was make for the American market, hence FM goes to 108 MHz. Europe originally had FM (there called VHF) to only 100 MHz, later extended it to 104 MHz, and finally to 108...

PC sound card based distortion analyzers.

I have a similar generator - they must have re-badged them with at least 5 or 6 different names. But I agree - they work well, are easy to use, and cheap. I wrote some software (mine came with some s/w) to make it easy to set up as a wobulator to use for aligning the IF in AM/FM radios (this...

    Phase Linear 400B....?

I agree with Fred - good advice. This could be made to work as is and it'll keep its value and uniqueness.

Derek92994's 700 Ser II White Oak conversion

I would clean the board with brush & alcohol. Looks like there is a fair amount of residue flux. Great way to both inspect the board and remove any solder balls.

    Fred's Toob amp(s) build.

My son for Christmas bought me a vinyl album (Nathaniel Rateliff - It's still alright, ). First new vinyl album since the late 80's. I still have all my old vinyl and my kids love looking through and playing my old stuff. Much of it well worn. So I was really impressed with this new vinyl -...

    Fred's Toob amp(s) build.

My son and I built the ST-70 version which he now has in his apartment where he's not living since he's back with us due to the covid. Paired it with my Dynaco PAT5 that I built in 1979 when I was living in Amsterdam. Bob Latino makes some nice systems - if you like tubes (I do).

PC sound card based distortion analyzers.

Pretty tough to "see" distortion of less than 5% (even with a trained eye) on an o-scope whether it be digital or analog, so for hi fi work, useless. Even noise riding on the signal can be tough to see unless it's really gross. That's why you can pay big bucks for signal analyzers - they can...

Hello All From Nevada, looking for repair for Phase Linear 400.

Right place. The White Oak site has lots of info and possibilities with what you can do. If you search this site, you'll find lots of details from folks who have used White Oak components (myself included) and who are quite happy with the results. Are you looking to do it yourself, or have...

    Technics M85 - worth restoring?

Hey Nando. Not well, actually. I replaced the capstan drive and some belts. Mechanically it runs well, but I can't seem to get the expected frequency response - output falls sharply around 2-3 khz (I bought one of the calibration tapes.). I've replaced all the potentially critical capacitors...

    Scope

So for about the same cost you could have a Pico scope (I'm assuming you have a desktop or laptop that could be used with it.). The Pico scope is a no-brainer with regards to setup with the computer and includes a built-in signal generator - which is great for learning how to use it. And it...

    Scope

I have one (2205A) in addition to a bunch of Tektronix scopes. For audio work the PicoScope is all you need, even the cheapest lowest bandwidth one. HP made some nice scopes, but I always preferred the Tek scopes. BTW, I used that 1741 back in the day (probably mid-80's). Storage scope is a...

    Scope

Go for it, if it is working (all functions) and at a good price, otherwise I'd go for a PicoScope. See here: https://www.picotech.com/oscilloscope/2000/picoscope-2000-specifications

    Phase Linear 2000 Pre-Amp Rebuild

And I agree that caps with a 25 wvdc rating are inadequate. 35 volts would be ok, 50 volt caps would be better.
