My First WOPL 400 Series 2 Build

I install the thin Nylon washers under the Control Board and under the two Retaining Nuts because I have to remove/replace the Control Board often during a rebuild. And it helps on my Bench Test Mule Amplifiers that I use to test Control Boards for customers. I should install wingnuts!

My First WOPL 400 Series 2 Build

Yes, because there is a discharge path now through the "Fused" and "Unfused" rails. However, I always measure or just install a 200 Ohm 10W bleeder resistor between both caps, just to be sure. I have seen too many sparks... You are smart to measure!

My First WOPL 400 Series 2 Build

Joe is generous with the wire lengths going from the Backplane Boards to the Control Board to make sure you have enough. You can certainly trim them so that the bottom cover does not come into contact with them. Completely optional. Measure twice, cut once! Input Jacks look great!

    Phase Linear 700b transistors

According to Joe at White Oak Audio Design, https://www.whiteoakaudio.com/estore.aspx It used to be a good idea to match the hFE, or Forward Current Gain, of the output transistors to make the amplifier more efficient. Today, with modern robotic construction, better design, and higher quality...

    A Shot in The Dark

OK, Send me the invoice, I have the additional parts already so it will not be too painful. I will let the customer pay me in three monthly installments, no interest. I will do the unboxing and installation pictures. Mark

    A Shot in The Dark

Sure I'll bite. Maybe Joe will give me an allowance for a review here after the installation of the new Meters and Faceplate? Unfortunately, my customer is not a wealthy man, more of a senior on a fixed income kind of guy. (He had two bolts holding a scratched Faceplate on his PL400). I still...

    A Shot in The Dark

I know we all get tired of reading these type of posts, but... Having checked all the usual sources, eBay, Craigslist, Audio Mart, Reverb, Audiokarma, etc. I have had no luck finding a pair of PL400 VU Meters. If anyone has a pair (of meters) I need them for a customer's PL400. They can be...

Are the days of cheap 400/700s done.

I don't know the cost of a Rolls SX95, it seems very complicated if you just want to bridge two channels of a stereo amp for a single output to feed a subwoofer. Phase Linear recommends a small metal enclosure to prevent any environmental noise and it could be handy to install Input and Output...

    Phase linear 700b transistor replacements

Our source for Phase Linear components is: https://www.whiteoakaudio.com/estore.aspx But many of the technicians here carry parts such as the output transistors.

    Randy's K's AKA Vega Killers

Will they replace it at no charge? I blew a 18" CV Musical Instrument Speaker (likely old age) that was doing duty in an Acoustic 301 Folded Horn Cabinet. I set it on the counter at CV (3762 S. Hill St. Los Angeles, CA) and the girl working there took it and came back with a new or refurbished...

    Another Phase-er and another project

Of course, a side by side test of your upgraded SII 400 and the ML amplifiers will be required.

Are the days of cheap 400/700s done.

You can bridge the Phase Linear amplifiers, but you have to do it correctly. The 700B Owner's Manual says to never connect the outputs together! There was an undated Service Bulletin describing the technique for correctly "Bridging" the 400, 400 II, 700, 700B, and 700 II into 8 Ohms or greater...

My First WOPL 400 Series 2 Build

Regarding the Capacitor hold down plate. I recommend you flip it over so the notch is closer to the top of the amplifier. I had to do this on mine in order for the Meter stud to clear the hold down plate. Depending on your Meter manufacturer, it may clear regardless, but that is what the notch...

Ever seen one of these? I have not.

A very rare unit indeed. Phase Linear 7000 Cassette Deck. Same as a Pioneer CT-A1 and introduced after Pioneer took over in 1980. Made for three years in Japan.

    Phase linear upgrades

If I was you... I would upgrade the PL400 first. It is a much simpler amplifier and the upgrade is less costly. You will learn so much and this learning will assist you if you decide to upgrade the PL700 amplifier. The sound of those upgraded PL400 amplifiers is magical. You will not regret...

    PL 400 renovation cost

The later PL400 amps had 8 Fins, started in 1975, I believe. The last Series I PL400 was assembled sometime in 1978.
