    Welcome Tapeheads!

Sam, While I respect your decision I don't share your experience with "TH management". I read most of what you post publicly because we both have similar interests, and unless I am blind, I do not see evidence of stupid management. Are you being called out for being a blunt speaking curmudgeon...

    Carver CT-Seven anyone?

Bob, you might try and find the PSC-50 preamp tuner. It is really tiny, but well built and sounds "perfect". All Carver's designs are perfect. I bet the PSC-50 is not his design.

    Available XPL909's and RCA410's

If you look at gepetto's screen, the negative peak is "fatter" than the rest of the sine wave. Oscillation at low amplitude compared to the audio sine wave is occurring and added to the fundamental frequency. Generally oscillations that cause heating are much greater amplitude that you see here.

    New build for shop system

Does he sound like an angry sailor to you? They may have had someone else cancel at the last minute. Here in the states I know some folks who are struggling with decisions whether to work or not. The cruise ships get all the press, but there must be ships asea right now with partially infected...

    Tandberg 3014A Cassette Deck

Canada is a small country, I thought everyone knew everyone! Now you have to get the deck to him without damaging the flywheels. Put it in a box and strap it to a pallet?

A 700-Watt Amplifier Design, by Robert Carver

Carver is making the case here for high power amps. At the time, 60 watt amps were all anybody needed! He is demonstrating that peak clipping does happen, and worse, clipping protection circuits can make nasty sounds. I believe there exists a more widely available Carver tome about "Why 350...

How do we determine resonant frequency of objects for less than the cost of a Big Mac?

I'm trying to remember how that was tested in the old days. You could play a sweep record and look for peaks, but I believe the method was to set the stylus on a piezo transducer and induce the sweep that way. The method I would think most effective is to thump on the turntable base while the...

    Anyone In The Dayton Area?

I shopped at mendelsons once back in the '70s. It was a huge surplus store that derived inventory form NCR in Dayton, and Air Force surplus from Wright Patterson. I do not recall much about the inventory except that it was not audio related. I'm sure most of the worthwhile parts will end up at...

Pile of Tubes found at old closed shop. Any Interest?

Sam, don't spend the time posting all the tube numbers. From you rpost last week, I'd say this is a typical tv shop assortment with some console and table radio tubes.

Pile of Tubes found at old closed shop. Any Interest?

6D10 is the only Compactron type tube that is worth keeping. All the audio tubes and rectifiers are worth something if not big money. if most of the tubes are TV related stuff like 25L6 can be sold. Just a bout any 2 number antique tube (#45) and 4 number tube is worth something.

    Amp heats up

Turntables are the worst! On analog tuners, if you get a bunch of static when you tune, spray one of the bearings towards the dial string with deoxit. Keep it away from the last two bearings, or you will launch the dial out into space.

    A Tape Surprise

Tape is for losers.....unless loosing is everything, then I want tape too! Sometimes I set decks up for D and it isn't much different from the ancient UD-XLI in my stash of calibration tapes. I am so highly biased that I can't bring myself to use Sony tape anymore (their labels came off in...

    Amp heats up

Made the number up assuming it was for PA use. If 25 mV is running cool then for home use I would use that for both channels. Your amp isn't old enough, but for stuff made in the '60s, we are spraying the bias pots with Deoxit. You will find random changes in bias are common when they oxidize.

    Amp heats up

Measure across one of the .15 ohm 3 watt emitter resistors. Set bias for 15mV. Measure it before you adjust. If the bias seems normal, the heating can be a dangerous high frequency oscillation. Check R49 and R50 for burns.

    Turntable Mats

I don't hear "bright" when I listen to records on glass. It seems to increase dynamics (which I value highly) and I hate felt mats. try it an see what you think. Too many people will put a felt mat on top of another mat lowering the VTA. I guess if no mat raises the VTA, the record could get a...

Anyone try playing a record on a glass platter with just a weight or clamp? I like my standard SOTA soft mat, understand, but glass does something interesting to the record.

    What cartridge are you using?

Bob, Those Signet speakers also had an Audio Technica clone, and they are really great speakers. If any of you guys are tempted to upgrade, I have used AT440 ML and used Shure V-15III, used AT shibata p-mount, and a genuine new AT14 stylus and used body all for sale.
