    Not really testing question but...

... it's about a tools. Have a Metcal MX-500P-21 soldering station which I just love, but... . When I power it ON, it turns on yellow LED instead of a green one (green means ready, yellow means fault). Couple times turn on-turn off and it works and it happens more and more often. Today I...

    Adjusting signal with resistor

Thank you, it's always much easier when more people participates in measuring, observing and discussing. One more thing I forgot to mention is that, if the one wants to do those adjustments, start with output adjustment (R41/R42). Those are 15K by the factory and I have replaced them with 11.5K...

    Adjusting signal with resistor

At last I have found some time to test R555 and R556 with trimmer and it is just fine with 52K instead if 82K. Don't have 52K resistors so used 47K and 5.6K from one cannibalized deck and got 51.87K and 52.09K. 220Ohm difference should not make a difference on such a values. Now I'm more than...

    Head groove-o-mania

...and one more thing: It's not difficult and complicated to do as it seems to be (except that you'll not gonna feel some fingers couple hours after). Now a head I was working with is one of those "softer" and took about one and a half hour to lapp, and some others can take double time, but its...

    Head groove-o-mania

Almost forgot to attach a pictures of lapping process: It's not a new head but way better than it was. For those who are wondering, pictures are taken with this.

Anyone who have an idea how to make marked area flat? Here is a schematics for rec path:

Lapping board is finished :) (13um is a sand paper 1500 which is equal to 12,5um actually) Will start working over the weekend and of course will attach a pictures.

    Head groove-o-mania

Here is a pictures of one head I have in a deck. Couldn't see dirt (or oxidation) without microscope. I don't want to judge if it is a little or much wear but there is definitely a dirt which I couldn't see without a microscope (couldn't get closer to a head). No way IPA can clean that head (I...

    Adjusting signal with resistor

That's what I did from beginning, but found later 2114 and replaced all 5532 (Dual Channel) and 5534 (Single Channel). Only one which is still on home made adapter is one OPA2227, which Alex ANT recommended as better choice for just that position.

    Adjusting signal with resistor

I have 2114 in my decks. It should be enhaced version of 5532 but I can't tell a difference. Reason why I chose 2114 is because I couldn't find 5532 in SIL package.

    HF loss - general

Default is Stereo, no ch. reference. As concluded earlier, that readings of bass roll off have to do with deck's resistance as roll off appearing in source mode. When testing in Stereo, no ch. reference mode, readings looks like this. Here is what AT manual says, but I don't have a clue what it...

    HF loss - general

I was thinking, regarding audio tester, in section Measurement what is a difference between Mono left/right ch. reference and Stereo no ch. reference ? Are you guys using mono or stereo when measuring FR? Here is what I got when testing with settings as above (observe that scale is 0,5db):

    Head groove-o-mania

I see that he is using non adhesive film and is his case lapping is a piece of cake since a heads he is lapping are without guides. Lapping sandwich heads is something else. Never tried lapping but I can imagine that it takes time and time. Found these on Amazon. Don't know if it is something to...

    Head groove-o-mania

Well, as I said before, I'm just an amateur but regarding 965, if someone can't change a belt on it, that person is total anti-talent and should stay away from any kind of electronics. For that part of a job the one don't even need SM. Regarding heads, the worst scenario is wrong tilt wear...

    Adjusting signal with resistor

Hey, no worries Makymak, I was (and still am) confused about this. Feels better that I'm not the only one who noticed this. My 555 and 565 are just fine (IARC), 727 is at +2 which is acceptable since that 200nWb tape gives +2.8db so 0.2db is missing to turn on that third peak. Anyway, 965 is...

    HF loss - general

Problem with things like this is that the one have either to do a whole job under the same day or write down observations :) I didn't done either first or second. IARC, frequencies from about 1K was going up and then there was a roll off with about 10K. Lowering resistance on R96 and R96 made it...

    Adjusting signal with resistor

Have replaced R41 and R42 with trimmers and adjusted output to 545mV using ANT test tape (200nWb), which is equal to 400mV with 160nWb as stated in SM. Peak meters are at +4db instead of +3db. Interesting thing is that resistance on those 2 trimmers is 10.80k and 11.75K (10k from factory). And...

    HF loss - general

One week later I've found a little time for myself (read: my decks). Here is what I got by marginally adjust VR302 and adjusting resistance on R95 and R96, from 15K to 5.4K. Result is much better, recording is now almost perfectly flat from 1.5kHz and up. Question is now, is it possible and if...

    Adjusting signal with resistor

Both 965 have the same mods, one is peaking to +5 the other to +6 if I remember correct. Both have NJM2114 for IC5 and IC6, and it was the same with NE5534. There is nothing between Dolby IC and IC5/IC6 than can be a problem.

    Adjusting signal with resistor

Yes, with 200nWb tape I have 245mV on Dolby chip and if I remember correct more than 570mV on output instead of 545mV. Will do as Skywavebe said, that will fix the problem.
