Either take the time to do it right, or find the time to do it twice. Apparently this time around I have selected the latter.
I spent my 20's as a bench technician and a field service tech working on dynamometers. I was fairly good at troubleshooting at one point. That feels like a long time...
I'm using the sil-pads for all output transistors. I only used heat sink compound for the heat sink to chassis thermal transfer. Transistor to heat sink thermal transfer (and insulation) is via sil-pads.
I actually took an hour to pull the boards out last night and I think I found my problem. I...
No, the trouble started when I tightened up the thermal straps on the bias transistors and cranked the backplane board down one last time. Then I added in the second row of transistors and had the runaway bias issue. The 4 to 8 fin conversion was just a joke. All I did was mount in the small...
Only thing I can think to do is keep hitting the rewind button. Taking out all three boards this morning. Perform a thorough inspection of all solder joints and wiring. Something broke free. Hopefully I'll find something and then begin the startup procedure from step 1.
One more thing I did was tighten down the thermal straps on the bias transistors. I was expecting to never lift the control board again. Just checked for shorts across any of those leads or to ground. Looks okay.
Hmmm... It appears that I may have spoke too soon on getting her up and running this weekend. That was back when I wasn't anticipating any problems.
I brought it up with the control board wired in and the bottom row of output transistors installed. It came up fine. I was able to adjust the bias...
My Rotel Phono pre arrived already! Color me impressed. That was the fastest eBay purchase->delivery I've ever seen.
I'm going to Tulum next weekend, so it'll have to go on the pile for a few weeks before I tear into it.
Back to the WOPL400...
I powered on last night with the bottom row installed. Everything came up fine. Voltages look good. I am getting 5.85v on my light board supply feeds. I'm not exactly sure how with this series 2 transformer, but it looks like I'm good to go for my White Oak analog VU...
I bought everything on the BillD bill of materials. Replaced power supply and signal path caps, resistors, and op-amps. Didn't change the sonic holography design, kept it fairly close to original values, just increased voltage ratings.
I just picked up the Schitt Mani 2 that VSAT recommended and I have heard good things about. I also now have this Rotel on the way. I'll hook both up to the RL-11 and see which one I like better.
Lol, you guys are bad influences. I just bought the Rotel too. I'll do a A/B and sell/return whichever one loses the head-to-head.
Sniff - do you have that Phono Guru upgrade instruction set handy? I just did a quick search and didn't immediately find it, so naturally I gave up.
From their site: "Mani 2 is simply the highest-performance affordable phono preamp, period." Sold. It's on the way.
Thanks for the suggestion! I was leaning towards the Pro-ject Phono Box S2 to pair with my Pro-ject Debut Carbon with Ortofon Blue cart, but I'll give this Mani 2 a try...
Lee - this might be a question for another thread on another day, but I intend to play 50% vinyl and 50% hi-res streaming on these through my BlueSound Node 2i. What upgrades can you suggest in the phono stage on the 3300? I would like to order the recommended parts and get that work in the...
