Got the playback levels spot on and verified with the Dolby Level tape. Measuring voltage directly at the chips worked really well. The Playback EQ is slightly off spec due to the head swap, I'll look at that again later. Lots of trial and error so far, here's a few things I've found about the...

    PL700 Rebuild

Problem is, the original output sockets are also past due retirement. And they went through several revisions trying to improve that back wall. I'd rebuild the back wall complementary like the final Series 2 and Pro's had, with the highest quality sockets you can find, or follow Eric's advice...

    what are you listening to?

Both were fantastic bands Gene. I think the first albums of both were the best. Seems that's often the case.

Playback is aligned a second time. Testing the Dolby alignment with the HPR Dolby Level tape by measuring directly at the chips soldered in test leads. The PL manual uses two alignment steps to calibrate the Dolby Board accurately. No tape. Going to get away from this for awhile, road trip...

Very nice! That one won't need any foam block between the vertical boards and cover.

Progress. Running through the playback alignment a second time for precision. Fine tuning the tape path using magnification and scope. I really prefer adjusting azimuth using superimposed sine waves on the digital scope. Very easy to observe phase as the waves invert during adjustment. VERY...

Fired up the Han-D-Mag and bulk erased the four cassette types the recording section will be calibrated to. The tapes vibrate violently within the shell, it's a beast, The flat bottom is configured for bulk erasing. Also comes in a 220 VAC version.

    M300 Gauge Clone

One piece of plate and two brass screws. I see no function for the screws on this particular deck. They have been machined for height. Plate and screw head thickness would correlate to measurement (b).

Success. Finally able to set Azimuth. No way the old head was capable of this. Going to try to align this deck with no component value changes on the boards. Later. Listening to King Weed......Smoke Over Doom.

Chris, ordered this one before I left for vacation. https://a.aliexpress.com/_mru6R7K

Got the Sendust head installed. Penetration, zenith, height, and guide alignment look good. The Sendust head has a tape guide the Ferric didn't have. Going to see if I can allow it to remain rather than disturb the retaining screw and green adhesive. Only external adjustments on this transport...

    M300 Gauge Clone

They talked about tolerances in threads on TH. I'll have to go back and look, but thought the optimum thickness was 2.445 mm, which is given for dimension A. Then it states a flatness of 0.04 mm that I assume is + or -. I do remember seeing a post about the final dimensions everyone agreed on...

The original Ferric head is RPB 060 B. Going to try Sendust RPB-066-0. Looks like a good fit without issues.

    M300 Gauge Clone

I'm not sure what the brass screws are for. I put dabs of grease on the screw heads and inserted the plate into the deck. The screw heads don't touch the deck. Maybe they are contact points for another type of deck? No marks for head insertion depth are engraved on the plate. That's OK in this...

    M300 Gauge Clone

Got the gauge measured. The plate is slightly undersized, and the 38.1 mm long feeler gauges slightly oversized in thickness, perfect length. Stacked for use, they're approximately .001 mm oversized, if I use averaged plate thickness. But this will slightly vary across the plate. Looks like...

    PL4000 rebuild

On my modified Phase Linear 2000 Series 2 preamps, I remove the plastic jacks, crimp in eyelets to reinforce the traces. Then install SwitchCraft jacks and insulators. The original jacks are self shorting, so the ground wiring is different between the input and output jacks, using 20 AWG buss...

Got the NOS Pioneer Sendust heads measured with the DE-5000. Very similar results to each other, that's good. They are similar but slightly different from the Canon Sendust head measurements Alex made available on his website document (Thanks). I did measure series inductance rather than...
