Trouble with a PL 5100 series II

Listening to mine now. Mine worked fine when I got it from a pawn shop. Went ahead and recapped it anyways because I wanted it to be good for decades to come. Didn't find any bad caps. I did the alignment, and it was spot on. One thing about it, a single FM antenna feeds it and the earlier PL...

    PL7000S2

Right on. These are the first I've changed. Got the old ones out and new put in. Hooked up the gear, and the old Lenovo T410 laptop died. Updating a fresh Windows install on a old work station as a replacement.

    PL7000S2

Testing some styrene caps. The deck came with 100 pF parallel to the playback head, while the schematic calls for 220 pF. Calculations call for a 330 pF. These melt easily while soldering or desoldering,

Yeah Lee! Got the time and tools to hopefully figure this out.

    PL7000S2

Been reading about parallel and serial LCR circuits last several weeks. Currently the play back heads self resonate frequency is too low to properly adjust the play back EQ. It's currently resonating at about 1.5 kHz. There's not a lot of information out there about this, but Nortronics says...

B+ and B- rail voltages are good? If so, than see what Joe thinks.

Joe says to run only the star ground in the full WOPL's. Not sure about your hybrid build, probably the same.

Star ground? Wire from buss bar center to chassis ground.

    PL7000S2

Got the Gennlab GL-341 tape. Got the tones indexed to my tape counter and noted using the scope and QA403. Then got head azimuth adjusted for this tape, it was close to the HPR tape adjustment, but definitely a difference. The 10 KHz signal is more consistent and stable on the GL-341 than the...

    My PL400 Series 1 Rebuild

I made a nice cap discharging jumper before building my first WOPL. Once you get the outputs in, the caps will self discharge. I still use it for other equipment, comes in very handy to prevent accidents. This tape deck carries a lot of capacitance when shut off. I discharge the caps before...

    PL7000S2

Still waiting on the tape. Been playing around with digital and analog test equipment to make measurements of the Playback EQ. If the SM alignment step requires playing a tape, I get best results with the old Leader Millivoltmeter and HP 1742A CRT scope. They are contemporary with the deck and...

Interesting take on the music business

Hard to buy new music when there's so much old music I missed and am just now discovering.

    My PL400 Series 1 Rebuild

Each rail fuse tip has a wire to the supply cap, and to each backplane unfused B+ or B-. Three wires. Or two if using a jumper between the boards.

    My PL400 Series 1 Rebuild

I see your point. There are 3 green (B+) coming off the TIP of the B+ fuse holder. There are 2 green (B-) coming off the TIP of the B- fuse holder. Where does that 3rd green wire go? Why are they different? To the unfused B+ bottom LHS on the left back plane board. Then a additional wire for the...

Need help to identify tonearm with sdt-cartridge

The head shell edges look like they were hand filed. I can't find a match using Google Lens. It may have sapphire cups installed for the pivots, one of the things done when upgrading the AR tonearm. Really interesting!

    My PL400 Series 1 Rebuild

Are you talking about the green and blue wires from the rectifier? These supply DC to the supply caps. The wiring to the fuse holders is straightforward. The white wiring is grounds.

    My PL400 Series 1 Rebuild

Yes. As you bring up the line voltage with the Variac, the click of the DCP relay is a indication that all is well. I can't remember the exact VAC that the DCP relay energizes at, maybe 80 VAC. If you bring line voltage up to 115-120, and no click, that's a indication of a problem. The DCP...

    PL7000S2

The SM is calling for a 120usec tape to calibrate the Playback EQ, specifically the Pioneer STD341A. All the HPR tapes are 70usec. I can get the Playback EQ alignment close with the HPR tape and some juggling, but I want this accurate.
