The problem has never been about their sound, but more about their reliability. When they go DC, you can kiss your speakers goodbye, or at least all your woofers. The one essential 'mod/add-on' I'd recommend, is some sort of DC speaker protection.

Flip off the individual covers between the heatsinks and check the output transistors for obvious replacements. Ones that don't belong there [ie different numbers or manufacturer] will stand out.

As you have an opportunity to flip the lid, take lots of pics clearly showing the components. Also, especially of the output transistors, [with the black covers removed] and make sure your pics are sharp enough to see the part numbers on the trannies and post them all here. People here will...

I've noticed it improves after the capstan idler rubber has had a good scrub and clean. Once they get shiny, and lose their 'gription', funny things happen. Once it's hardened, then the tape gets pulled through unevenly.

it's jumped up 50 cents a litre here in MEL in the last week... I was gonna fill up the day it went up. Good thing I checked before I went. It can wait.... Plenty of tanks in the basement carpark I can siphon. LOL

To be fair, unless you personally have access and experience in producing something like this, then his solution although desirable, is not cheap or practical, unless he's gonna spin up some extra ones and make them available cheap! [...unlikely] My ol' 700 hasn't had it's belts done in 40...
