The Frankenstein I'd Like To Build

Bob, Remember your plan is to go mobile. You can drive until you find good FM! Sniffer is not big on makeup and fingernail polish.

Repair of Luxman and Pioneer Tape Decks

For performance, initial cost, and ease of repair, the Nakamichi BX1,BX2, BX100, BX125, BX150, CR1 cannot be beat. These lowly 2 head decks perform better than most 3 head decks! If you can find a vintage JVC deck with sendust heads, they too are great for the money. Travis, I have a used...

The Frankenstein I'd Like To Build

Bob, not all vintage receivers are muffled. many were, especially in the '60s because anything above 15kHz was considered noise. Try a HK 630 or 730 receiver some time and you'll learn that bandwidth limiting was not universal. I've had a number of ancient Yamahas here and the will also...

    Adcom GFA-555 Thread

Change the electrolytics on the input board. They are leaky in every GFA-555 we see. MrRye, if you need a variac, let me know. I know "smoke test" is a joke, but a variac makes life on the bench much easier.

    STV-4H diode

If you have STV-2H, or 3H, add one or two diodes in series, and you'll have a 4H. 1S1555 or 1N4148. I have a bunch of 2H diodes here.

    Leach amplifier?

I built the little Leach preamp with good results. my friend Bob Hoover made a 6 watt true class A power amp using the same topology, and it was state of the art (back in 1978)

New Parts Available for X1000R- Speed- Reel Switch

Jim, I have TA-200w modules and maybe a TA-150W. Make a reasonable offer. I've seen bad driver transistors make it look like the module is bad, so my recommendation is to shotgun them first before spending $$$ on the module.

Unfortunately It is Time To Report

Like an online review, any factual reporting of mediocre work can be posted online as a matter of opinion only. Post your review with a few photographs and let the pictures do the talking. Ebay has well established feedback mechanisms to keep the site clean and ethical, so it is absolutely fair...

    STV-4H diode

I just had an STV-3H with one diode shorted internally. The symptom was no bias on that channel. The STV-4H has 4 series connected diodes inside. Rather than leaky, it probably has the same failure as mine.

    EPI fans

Try dyeing the cones blue! First spray the paper with a bleach solution. The paper will turn whitish or brownish (like Pioneer CS-99a) Then spray with fabric dye until you get the blue you want.

Tascam 122 Mk. III Serviced by Sam at Skywave (Thanks Sam!)

Sam just isn't happy with anything new.... Darn right about parts though. It is amazing the shift in our repair approaches in 1984 and today. I think 1984 was the year certain companies began to run out of parts for '70s units. The first I remember were Infinity 1/2 line diaphrams. I had a...

    Local FM News

Nashville Public Radio bought the Vanderbilt University radio license and made that station full-time classical. What is cool is the do not use compressors and heavy limiting, so the music has the correct dynamics. it the record is from the 50s, you hear tape hiss. Separation is where it should...

STK 082 module - anybody got one to spare?

There was a time period when SK replacements were often substandard or failed out of the bag. Look for ebay seller "we have that item" (NJ) or Consolidated Electronics (OH). both are reliable.

    Welcome Tapeheads!

Sam, While I respect your decision I don't share your experience with "TH management". I read most of what you post publicly because we both have similar interests, and unless I am blind, I do not see evidence of stupid management. Are you being called out for being a blunt speaking curmudgeon...

    Carver CT-Seven anyone?

Bob, you might try and find the PSC-50 preamp tuner. It is really tiny, but well built and sounds "perfect". All Carver's designs are perfect. I bet the PSC-50 is not his design.

    Available XPL909's and RCA410's

If you look at gepetto's screen, the negative peak is "fatter" than the rest of the sine wave. Oscillation at low amplitude compared to the audio sine wave is occurring and added to the fundamental frequency. Generally oscillations that cause heating are much greater amplitude that you see here.
