    An Easter Egg for Vincenzo

The more I listen to it, the more I do notice and appreciate its qualities... This night I've played a first italian press of Stevie Wonder's "Hotter Than July" (1980) ... this vinyl LP, as many italian pressings, doesn't show any strong treble (actually it's a bit the opposite) BUT... playing...

    How about a capacitor discussion?

yes, getting the whole schematic on a big sheet of paper where you can also write on is useful to also troubleshoot or to simply study the schematic to make modifies.

    How about a capacitor discussion?

of course, you know I am not too expert in these matters... but on a crossing like that, I'd expect the signal goes to all the tracks together. anyways, since the purpose is to just identify what the electrolytic capacitors are doing, in this specific case you have to worry only about C19 and...

    How about a capacitor discussion?

for all of those you show here in this post, including C426 and C76 (including the same ones at the other channel) I would go with bipolars. I see you also go with polarized for audio, which I never happened to buy till now because I directly go with bipolars in such situations, though.

    How about a capacitor discussion?

will give it a good look to your above pieces of schematic just after dinner. just, more than saying between two "zero volts", i'd say in series along the signal path which is not DC but some voltage alternating with the signal itself. Regarding dolby chips (and op-amps too) , I use to download...

    How about a capacitor discussion?

to identify a bit better what any capacitors are doing, I use to do this way... first, I print the whole schematic on big enough size (i.e. selecting that feature on Acrobat which makes me print on many A4 sheets which then I do cut and paste together, rebuilding a very big printed...

    How about a capacitor discussion?

as a rule of thumb, I am following this kind of recipe when choosing capacitors... the ones in the signal path (i.e. coupling ones, connected in series throughout the signal path) will be bipolar ones (i.e. Nichicon UES or Panasonic SU BP). the ones around the signal path which aren't...

    An Easter Egg for Vincenzo

an interesting (but obvious) update... this phono preamp Alex made for me is for MM cartridges, and I do have/use a few different ones like: Audio Technica AT-VM95 (it's nice that I can simply swap any of the needles of this series without needing to re-setup, since the alignment and the VTF...

    An Easter Egg for Vincenzo

ABSOLUTELY SO! :D and yes, this is only the beginning... and it's great to realize that for my whole vinyl collection (and I do own far more vinyl LPs than CDs, which I never really liked) , upgrading just the phono preamp is equal to upgrade the sound quality of any single vinyl record I own. :)

    An Easter Egg for Vincenzo

Sure, that looks like a big power amp, this is a phono preamp. Anyways, power consumption of phono preamps based on tubes is a lot more than this one, though... like at least 30-60 times more. So, another good thing related to this Kora 3T phono preamp is that it delivers a tube-like sound but...

    An Easter Egg for Vincenzo

indeed. this device needs only about 30mA per hour (even less than the 50mA on the back panel's sticker)... not a big deal at all.

    An Easter Egg for Vincenzo

and trying it today, after being on since yesterday night, it sounds NICE just from the first moment. this guy loves to stay on. :D Must say the dynamic transients (punchiness) are just SERIOUS on all frequencies. :p

    An Easter Egg for Vincenzo

a Happy update, yesterday the "Easter Egg" arrived here! A wholehearted THANK YOU to Alex! :D so, yesterday night I've managed to make the holes in the aluminium box and this night I've attached the transparent stickers I've made for it. I couldn't wait for closing the box and finally give...

    Difference between metal film resistors

no worries, you can buy any values but, when working on decks, it will always happen that you need some value you don't have and then you will go with series or parallel ones. :p

and you can always make more values by connecting series or parallel.

    How about a capacitor discussion?

I started buying UKL like 3 years ago and I've always got them black/white, though.

    How about a capacitor discussion?

good polystirene ARE good. problem is they do exist only of very small values, up to nanofarards, then they can be used mostly for capacitance loading and for EQ network. also, from latest post by Alex, I've learnt there are the ones made with tin foil (best) and the ones made with aluminium foil.

    what are you listening to?

yes, i've read about this crazy story of them being the Beatles in disguise. It surely helped them to get some unexpected success at that time. Anyways, i would rate them as a good band in itself with really good musicianship regardless of the Beatles influences (which are very welcome, though)

    what are you listening to?

These days I am listening quite a bit to a (obscure?) 70s band from Canada named KLAATU... especially their first 3 albums from 1976, 1977 and 1978. they resemble a bit the Beatles style (surely the most evident influence in the band) but there is also some kind of prog (especially in their...
