Next up on “this old junk”, the TOTL NAD 5300 CD player.

Drawer won’t open so we’ll start with that. Most likely a bad/dirty drawer limit switch… pulling the drive shortly.

Pulled the drive out- the trim door had to come off and I feared I might break it… but I didn’t somehow.

It has a loading belt but that was fine. I think the cam mechanism was out of sync. And it’s acting like the open button may have dirty contacts as it take a few presses to accept my input.

Sounds okay with the onboard headphone amp but MUCH better with my WP headphone amp. Not a bad player I’d say.

Deep cleaning and looking into that drawer switch next.
In case your 5300 shares the same transport as my 5100, I'll be following your investigation of the drawer switch.

With my 5100, the drawer opens after I push the switch but retracts again immediatly afterwards. It takes 3 to 5 attempts before the drawer stays open. And once it does stay open, 50% of the time, it retracts closed as soon as a disc hits the tray.

Did you look at the troubleshooting guide in the service manual for the 5100? I don't know if it shares the transport or not... (5300 service manual attached)

I have it up and running but I think part of the problem is the "open" switch for the drawer- either it's dirty, or it requires an extended press to register I want it open. I plan to open the front and clean the switch and see if that solves that issuue.

Otherwise, it seems to operate normally. Sounds decent too.

I think I just fixed this.

Where I’m pointing with the screwdriver is a tab that hooks on the bottom of the circuit board that holds the face switches. The board was not clipped in fully and held there with some glue from somewhere else. So, the switch was farther from the button, and probably barely getting pressed. Fingers crossed this is it…
