I had a 1972 Pinto Wagon, it was a heck of a parts hauler, and the wagon was not supposed to blow up when hit from behind......thank goodness I never had to check that theory. The pitch in 71' was that a VW Beetle was $1999.00 and a new Pinto was $1995.00. They sold a lot of them before the gas tank scare. This picture is priceless :).

In 1970, Ford decided to move ahead with production of their new Pinto, even though their engineering crash tests showed it had a flawed design that would cause the gas tank to explode if the car was hit from behind. An estimated 500 people died in rear-end collisions involving Pintos.

500 died in Pinto rear-end collisions; how many total died in rear-end collisions, regardless of vehicle type, during the same time-frame?

Not saying their lying; just saying having ALL the data would paint the accurate picture...

I suspect the Pinto is as "unsafe" as other vehicles in rear-end collisions, and possibly safer than some, particularly older designs, which were still on the road in the 70's as daily drivers.

Nando.
I remember seeing that ad in a High Fidelity magazine in my high school library. Had forgotten all about it but it's one of my all-time favorite ads. And I've seen and been involved in creating a bunch of them over the years!
