Today I've ordered a pair of these just out of curiousity:

They reminds me somehow of the good old Sony MDR-V900's I've owned for years:

There is a huge difference however....

The pair I've just ordered will just cost only €19,-!!! ($21,27...)

I'm always curious about "bargains" like this....

Will report once they are in.

It will be interesting to know how they sound, Miles. Are they brand new - because they look new? At that price, I wouldn't expect much, but would be delighted if they turned out okay.

Yo!

They are in...

First impression:

WOW!

The size, feel and build quality is very similar to the MDR-1 type:

but the sound and the costs of it....

They will surpass all the Sony's easily in every aspect!

I've tested them with two of my reference mixes which I know very well in every detail, copied to 24/96 Flac files :

These cans are certainly not usable as monitors during accurate mixing and mastering, but HELL...

They just only need a little piss to drive them properly (impedance <32 Ohm's)

For 'on the go' or just for mobile purposes these cans are sounding A M A Z I N G !

Great images, Miles. Now that you've revealed the model of headphones, I see they are currently out of stock at one of the stores I deal with. Price here at Long & McQuade is $42.99 Cdn.. How did you originally find out about them?

MDR's took a turn for the worse after 2012... or there abouts... with the lone exception of the balanced ZR1's. Plug those babies into one of these ...

WM1Z or WM1A

and there are no words to describe the experience, especially with DSD files.

But it all comes with a steep price. o_O

The cans list for $1800 but can be had for lower. I've seen em as low as $1200. Those two digital Walkmans start at around a grand ... and that gold one is over twice that. They have lower tiered models that also have a balanced input that are pretty stellar too and those start at about six hundy.

I own the WM1A via my review endeavors so it didn't hit the wallet. Even with regular Joe, unbalanced cans - the right ones - it sounds pretty freaking amazing with FLAC & above... even in blue-tooth mode. But I prefer wired.

I've tested my 'foogazi' cans with two other favourites:

Did only one single modification replacing the spiral cable by a straight one, but for the rest these cans are really a steal.

@Nando: I found them here:

THey loo lovely, too bad you had to play that puissant Roger Waters on them, beware Brits with over size heads :p

You got it Lee!

DSD is one of those esoteric formats. Cool - but you won't see me loading up a huge library of material formatted that way. I'm a FLAC guy
