A true, one-of-a-kind Legend, one-of-a-kind Artist.
 
Pretty shocking news. His newly-released album was his good-bye to his family and the living. My youngest son will be mourning - he's an even bigger fan of David Bowie than I am.

I heard about this earlier but was still putting the computers back together on the new desk mom sent and was really tired as well as stunned.

I think I've heard of the fatal illnesses of quite a few musicians in the last year or two but like a lot of people you sort of forget until it happens, maybe because you feel they are somehow immortal from hearing their works all of your life, or seeming like it.

What I'm gathering though, sadly, is that 70 is the new ninety.

He had seen it all in his life, and he created a lot of it.

Gay wouldn't be where it is today without androgynous. He probably did much more for gay rights than the Village People or anybody in demonstrating that different is life.

And he never stopped moving ahead, or putting self-criticism out there fully exposed for the world to see in his work.

So it's no wonder at all that David Bowie is so revered by fellow artists and fans alike.

David Bowie was born David Robert Jones and adopted the name Bowie to avoid confusion with the member of The Monkees, the story goes. He married Mary Angela Barrett (Angie Bowie) in 1970 (divorced 1980) and has a son, Duncan Jones from that marriage. In 1992 he remarried to the supermodel Iman and they had a daughter, Alexandria Jones. His fellow Spiders From Mars bandmate, guitarist Mick Ronson died in 1993.

Fittingly, there is a spider named for Bowie, Heteropoda davidbowie.

David Bowie made me buy my first colour TV. I just moved into a house with a room mate and my TV was a 12" B&W. Watched a show called "In Concert" and saw Bowie for the first time. A few months later, I read it would be re-broadcast so I went on the never, never plan for $650 in 1973 dollars for a 20" RCA with stand so I could watch again in colour on a big screen.

I think I have every album he made (Bowie or Davy Jones) up to and including Lodger. Also have the Cat People soundtrack. Got one later release on CD and the Tin Machine pair. Sold all my 12" singles but kept "Heros". Just found "Heathen" used on CD but haven't listened to it yet.

I was a fan.
 
I liked his 1st album, after that I thought he was pretty much a freak until he resurfaced in the 80s with Let's Dance. He had an interesting life to say the least. I remember him being on the Paul Lynde Halloween show (Kiss was also) and he did the Major Tom thing in that creepy spandex suit. He was really wacked out then trying to find his own identity and deal with his demons. He seemed to have grown up a lot since those crazy 70s days. In the movie The Wall, I always associated the main character with Bowie moreso then Syd

That's prophetic, Miles. Like many others, I didn't know how dire his prognosis was. There is plenty of coverage on CBC of David Bowie's life. Canadian astronaut, Chris Hadfield, was the first to record a song from the Space Station.

Never a huge fan, but sad loss either way.

As I eluded to in the Lemmy thread, a major shift is beginning. In 15 years from now, how many big names will be left? What kind of impact will this have on the music industry? Who's gonna be doing stadium tours in 2030?

These questions dont have answers, but something I wonder about more often these days.
 
Ron, I'm sorry you found him creepy, you might want to visit his music again. Gene Simmons told CNN he was beyond time and space, he influenced so many rock bands it's not funny. As a young gay man in the '70's he showed me that it's ok to be "a bit off" :wink:

Gene also said the beauty of Bowie was that somewhere in Nebraska or Wyoming a 15 year old kid will hear his music and be inspired to make music as well

The only song of his I could handle was when he sang "Little Drummer Boy" with Bing Crosby. I don't care for "Screw down Hair-doo's"
 
Stuwee, by creepy I meant he was not mainstream at the time. He was not gay, he was bisexual though the distinction is blurred I suppose. He seemed "eccentric" and over the top to the point of absurdity. Much like Miley Cyrus

I liked his 1st album, probably one of the best examples of early Glam. The Major Tom time was also good but he dressed and looked really wierd so hence a "freak"

Rebel Rebel was a great tune also

His Black Star album was carefully planned, it was his last gift to his fans, he knew he did not have long to live at that point

RIP Bowie, you were one otherworldly dude who managed a career that spanned decades AND genres

Well said Northwinds! I woudn't call myself a big fan but he definitely had a huge impact on Rock! I love a lot of his earlier stuff... especially Ziggy Stardust...! It was a masterpiece in my opinion. Recently watched the special that was

on.. Showtime? Insightful!!!

RIP David!!!
