Jay used to do a program were he would fire up one of his rare gems and take it for a ride and I remember watching the program where he takes one of those for a ride,,he said he used to catch hell from the local Police every time he took it out because it was so loud
I watched the same program. There were a few regular car enthusiast programs I would watch on the weekends. Another of my favourites was "My Classic Car" with Dennis Gage. One of our car club members of the Buick Gran Sport Club of America had his car featured on MCC.

It's a 426 Wedge.

Here's a group shot our club used for one of our commemorative T-shirts.

Robert: I don't see many mid 60's 421 SDs around at the car show circuit. I might have a picture of one, or two, but most likely in one of my photo albums.

I ran a 61 with 62 heads (127s) which jumped my hp to 405 the 63s used the 980 heads and a special hi rise intake manifold with a modest 410hp with 12-1 pistons using pontiacs grey ghost body they would run 11:30s in 1963

That's very fast for that time period and even for today. You've got to miss those days.

I dropped down to a single 4barrel which dropped me into from BSA to CSA, it tipped the scales at close to 4k but with a Fresh trans I would run 12:60s at 120 plus through the traps in 64 when the AHRA rules changed I started to look for a 64-65 Leman body and just swap power trains but a railroad freight handlers salary just wasn't enough to do the swap so I pulled the McKeller #10 cam out of it and swapped out the 4:30 gear in favor of something a little more road worthy

Are those pics of your car in stock and race trim? So you had a '61 body with the '62 SD motor? What body style was your car?
Tempest ? Man that is a nice car you had there. Wasn't there only like 178 SD's offered in 1962 from the factory? And only about 60
or so spare motors? How did you get your SD motor?
And what was the "Grey Ghost" body? I always thought that name was given to a road racer '64 body in the 1970's?.
I love old drag cars and the history behind them.
Great stuff Robert and like many of us old guys who had old drag cars wish we would have held on to them.
There was a "Swiss Cheese" SD Pontiac that sold for close to one mill awhile back.
First neither one of those cars were mine,Somwhere there are some Pics of mine but I could never find them, Late in 61 Pontiac did offer a 421 SD with 306 heads(from the rare 373hp 3x2bbl) and it was rated at 373hp because of the small heads. When the 62 was introed it had the bigger heads(127s) and required a different intake 2x4s had 405hp, single 4b was the nascar motor rated at 380 with 11-1 comp because I also drove the car on the street I opted for the 11-1 engine. the car ran great but I had to retard the timing and clutch fans hadn't been invented yet so it ran pretty warm. OK the grey Ghost story. as you know Pontiac did make a all out drag car in 62 (aluminum bumpers fenders hood etc) in 63 Pontiac made a last ditch effort to stay with the stage 111 hemis with the aluminum package so they did everything the could to strip the weight off the 117wb Catalinas even aluminum and drilled out frames which would shave about 400lbs and bring them down to their advertised shipping weight of 3600lbs and painted them silver Metallic hence the name Grey Ghost, My friends Ghost fully stripped down to 3300b and running a 480 inch motor could turn 10.90s and pull the wheels a few feet of the ground
How did I get my Motor,,There was a guy who lived in Morrision IL named Arnie (the Farmer) Beswick who had plenty of them
The three years I ran my car all I ever had to do was freshen up the heads. change out the Mackeller#10 and fresh valve springs, My Trans would last maybe a half a season before going soft me. I suppose if I didn't drive the car on the street it would have lasted longer

Very cool. Arnie is quite the racer. i do remember seeing him many times at the different strips in So. Cal.
An early Pic of Arnie and one of the factory light weights. http://www.arniebeswick.com/bio.htm

Arnie was still going at 82 years young. Still smokin um. Check out the video.

Yup thats him,,I actually ran him for top stock eliminator final at Great lakes Dragaway(the Grove) in Wisconsin with the handicap system, he caught me just before the lights. He told me he had to really put his foot in it seeing as he's the one who built my motor, back then he ran a tempest with a SD in it, it had a strange Trans set up 2 two speed trans bolted together with a clutch

Nando, you headed to Langley on Saturday?
Unfortunately no, since I've already taken my allotted earned time off and that's a work day for me. If you do go, could you take a few pictures, Doug?

Robert: That's quite a relationship you had with Arnie Beswick. During those days many factory cars were being sponsored in the drags. For Buick, Lenny Pops Kennedy ran a number of contender Buicks in the 60's and 70's. I'll have to dig out some old pictures. I think Lenny even ran against Arnie - Buick vs Pontiac.

Nando, is that Maxwedge car a Fury? I had one for a very short period of time. I think it had a 383 in it and the push button tranny

I never minded when a Buick won(which was rare)just not enough of factory help I guess I just hated Chev and Mopar owners. there was a 427 Ford that used to beat me every once in a while you know the one with the bubble hood with the Hi Riser under it. I used to study the lights and as the last yellow went out I was on it.
I wish I had the dough I'd set-up another SD and run in Nostalgia stock
A little known truth is that Beswick actually was signed by Mercury to run one of their 427 factory cars. He used to trailor the Merc and haul the SD Tempest behind it qualify both cars. Mercury found out about it and pulled the car, I don't think Arnie gave a shit anyway

That would have been the Ford Thunderbolt. Although I appreciate all muscle cars, I do pin my heart on Buick first and other GM marques second. I didn't know about Beswick playing both fields.
