If I'm lyin I'm dyin Nando, that's exactly what happened. I've had that happen too many times in the oilfield to question it, just shake my head, count my lucky blessings and move on......gonna be a good amp fixin night!!

Joe, it was just a 1/4 pound of "kitty bunnies" Jani says, she thinks you should revise the threshold...

Jani got her CPU unhooked and on the "project table" of hers. Exposed the innards and gave it a good cleaning and left the inside exposed. I came home from work, grabbed my DMM, and an IEC cord , walked up, plugged it and and commanded----
" COMPUTER,HEAL THYSELF"
and then turned it on.....and off....and on.....and off.....it is now back in Jani's office and doing payroll as we speak....
Sometimes it works that way. Leave it alone for awhile or overnight and it boots up.

So don't get a big head over it?
Sure get a big head why not. Just saying sometimes when you walk away from an issue you either think of the solution and then sometimes the issue walks away from you.

I hate to say this but knowing computers from experience if this issue is a hardware issue it may surface again. I hope not but you never know.

Well I would say the issue of "whir" is an omen to start transferring data to the new puter and get it up and running.

Got lucky with that one Lee, I'm glad the issue is resolved. Didn't see this thread until now. A friend of mine had a HP that he never cleaned, he fried the video card just from normal windows desktop use due to cat hair, so I gave him another video card. 12 months after that he went to turn it on one day and it would spin up the fans for 5 seconds then shut down. I tried everything from changing the memory modules/peripheral cards and even the power supply until finally declaring the motherboard was dead. Not a bad run for 6 years of abuse due to lack of maintenance. So I built him another dual core computer out of my spare parts, put a nice dual fan 550 watt power supply in for him and hasn't missed a beat since. That PC is everything to him due to his love of music and playing in a band, it had to be fixed, no option.

I did have another friend's pc that would not turn on, I solved the problem by pulling the mains plug out of it for a few minutes then powering up again. Seems the atx power supplies/motherboards can get a bit of a power up bug when left on for long periods of time without a complete cold power down.

Then I should count my lucky stars I've run the same computer since I bought this one in 2003 or 4 . It's never crashed, never lost a bit of data, and cleaned it once a couple years ago...

Yep, that it's already a classic that permeates the lexicon of the day should be an indication it shall remain funny...
