Although Rain is best know as the voice of the homicidal rogue computer HAL 9000, he was an accomplished Shakespearean actor before and after his roles in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984). Stanley Kubrick said he picked Rain over a few others for that unassuming delivery that hid the murderous 'soul' of HAL and it's fear of 'dying' at the hands of Dave Bowman.

In the end that voice made the soulless computer seemingly human, with sins of men.

The panels with the big round red lights and 'I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that" have become cultural icons.

Rain retired from films by the 1990s and passed away Sunday, November 11.
