-Replace the rear connectors !
-Caps must be 50 V / 63 V instead 35 V , expecially 1 and 2,2 uF.
-Clean very well switches using the slots on the rear side ;
you must disassembly the front panel to reach them .
I and my hifi guru restored two PL 4000 and one PL 1000.

That was a reference to the Wizard of Oz when the group got into the castle and the old guy was pulling handles and blowing shit up

Why are there are 4 pots on the joystick but only 2 are connected . All four wipers are connected and the terminals of 2 of the pots only. It only shows the two connected pots on the schematic I have.

I have not delved into the skizmo as of this moment but usually, 1 pot for left and right, and 1 pot for front to back.

Perry,
Calman 46 quoted " this is my first PL 4000 "
so I wrote soon : Replace all rear connectors !
It' s well known that they are a plague .
I wanted to help him to avoid problems ,
after my experience on PL 4000/ PL1000.

I am putting my PL 4000 back together (first PL 4000) . New caps , re-flowed solder everywhere ,new rear panel jacks . I asked this before , the joystick has four pots but only two are wired. All 4 wipers turn but only two of 4 pots are wired . Why is this ?

So by 2 way ,left & right ? Can the PL 4000 be used as 4 channel preamp ? That's what I thought the 2 used pots were for . I need to read the owners manual and hook this up . I do have a WOPL 400 for it . But I need to test it first . Thanks for the replies guys

As you can see the shaft pots are mechanically connected via a blade with a slot ;
so when you move the joystick you can obtain all balance combination .
Why four channels?
This preamp has been designed with SQ decoder and infact the joystick has been located
between SQ decoder and output stage board ( called logic board ) .
In case you want use this preamp in 2 channels mode simply engage 2 CH on front panel .
In case you want use this preamp in 4 channels mode you must add an other power amp
and two speakers . It's a good solution to have an ambience effect also with normal stereo sources .
Power amp and speakers can be very cheap . It works very well .
To test this unit it's necessary to have a sine wave generator ( a CD test disc ) and a cassette recorder,
using VUs as an ac voltmeter .
Start testing with only 2 boards : tone board and logic board and disengage all special function on
front panel .
