well, decided to be a glutton for punishment and struck out to recap my old series one phase linear 200

it has been worked on before as someone left his little footprints inside...

lets start off with a parts list...

bought this on ebay....less than 30 bucks...

from fantasiaaudio...

some of those little ones were very hard to identify....i had to use 2 magnifying glasses together...

this one looks like it has been around the block a time or two....

and exposed to humidity at some time in its life....

most will clean up.....with time and patience....

dirt dobbers had filled some areas around the big caps...that i had to scrape out with a screwdriver....

this is the right channel freshly removed before any work was performed....
you can plainly see...it is pretty rough...
but, it was one of my daily drivers....just lately was a scratchy noise and pop on the left channel....upon startup...
i imagine that could be just about anything...only lasted a few seconds then would run all day no problem...
one reason i decided to recap...

now for the clean side...lol

i cleaned up the board with sniffs magic formula plus a small brass brush...and scraping with a small screwdriver....

after parts installed i resoldered every joint on the board....

i have learned that these old boards can harbor a boat load of ill will...

and one should take nothing for granted....

Yes, I prefer and sub non polar caps in the audio path any time I can as they perform better with Ac(audio signal). Back when these amps were produced non polar caps in this value were rare and added to much cost for most audio companies to use. You can get away with polarized caps at very low current, but you would never see a polarized cap in a speaker crossover. The non polar is fine in either filtering and better in AC applications as this. Thanks, ed"

this was the answer from the supplier of the cap kit about np cap being used in place of the polar cap at location c2....
a few of the members of the forum answered...and everyone seems to be in agreement....

some of the wires were tight....as someone was afraid to waste a mm or two of wire...
i did not stress the board....i just made the connection on the trace side...
a lot neater and the boards are no longer being pulled to one side....

i also photoed every move i made....and referred back when i reinstalled the wired i had to unsolder to remove the board....
there is one little ell shaped bracket that sinks 3 diodes....i removed and cleaned the white stuff...it was hard and flaked right off....
after application of fresh white stuff...i remounted....

i did cut and resolder the green ground wire going to the front meters....wasnt but a thread or two on the board side....
i just redid both sides just to be safe....
i think one of the right channel leds is not working....it is the +3 one...last one....i see the left channel flicker when pumping it up...
and the right channel does not....
i am kinda scared to push these....i understand how sensitive and close to the edge they can be....after 45 years or so....
working or sitting....neither prolongs life...
lol
thanks again

i am certainly happy to provide you with your daily dose of scolding me....
i was wondering if you felt bad....
i am relieved now....
