Hi all,

Found this Marantz Model 5220 downtown at Pearl's this morning. The other Marantz deck I have is a Model 5010. Needs a few buttons and lamp replacement. But for $10 it plays and rewinds. No fast forward, however. I may spend a few dollars on it. Playback sound quality is good.

I would have taken a punt for $10 too!

A little polish and rubber treatment on the wheels and it’s easily a $20 deck.

Well it's been a good week at the local thrift - Pearl's: first the Realistic STA-20 receiver, then the pair of Realistic Minimus 2.5 speakers, yesterday, followed by today's purchase of a Marantz 5220 cassette deck. Most likely, it will all be gifted to someone who needs a starter system.

Really surprised at how good this Marantz Model 5220 deck sounds on playback. I patched it into my main system, today, satisfied it was not going to damage any of my tapes. I chose a recording of a Jean-Michel Jarre compilation - including Oxygene - on a Maxell UD XLII 90. The music and deck are of the same production year -1976. The fast forward is now working. With ferrite heads, this deck has very nice resolution and had no problem reproducing the demanding nature of the musical content.

I’m probably going to end up with a damn Pioneer cassette deck to go with my “new” receiver… then a Pioneer turntable…

Even the enamel color dots in those control levers look fresh.

Just goes to show that rock-bottom-dollar, thrift finds are still a thing... even these days.

You guys are really starting to piss me off with your outrageous bargain finds! Why can’t I find a ridiculous deal on something???

Congratulations, though… I’ll find a good bone eventually if I just keep digging…

I haven’t got a good deal in a while. Last was the Polk speakers for $9 I think it was. That was a couple years ago.

Ya just never know when luck will turn.

The 5220 has a unique loading and eject mechanism. Rather than describe it, I will take a short video, this evening, of loading and ejecting a tape.

There doesn't seem to be many other people in town who are interested in this old audio gear. The demographics are changing and younger people walk right past the old audio gear. But, I have been very lucky to find what I've found at the thrift store. Just when there is a lull from good stuff appearing on the shelves, I get lucky.

I think one (or more?) of the old Pioneers handled tape the same way- you jam it in there and when you eject it pops up and flies out at you with a vengeance.

TEAC may have had one like that, but it was a top loader, not a front loader, but same tape launch mechanism. (I think)
