    Another opinion on Counterpoint Amplifiers

When I had my Advents, with the first Counterpoint, before my Vandersteens, I had a 15” down-firing non-powered sub. (Our favorite brand: DAK!) The room was small but it helped fill that void. Also made a nice amp stand between my speakers (I had the rack on one side then). Reproducing bass in...

    Another opinion on Counterpoint Amplifiers

I always liked my amp. But, when I got a second one, it was a revelation. Everything else remained the same but all of a sudden, the clarity, channel separation and raw power of everything was just there. Carrol Shelby: “There’s no replacement for displacement.” I NEVER get even 1/3 into it...

    Another opinion on Counterpoint Amplifiers

As much as I like mine, I have a hard time recommending them. Because if/when they need repair, it’s a huge expense or a scrap job. They are wonderful when working well but there are plenty of failure stories, and I also had a failure- but it was a very easy fix in my case. The tubes are...

    what are you listening to?

Wood glue is a good trick! I had my exotic pieces dipped in wax on the ends to reduce checking.

    Another opinion on Counterpoint Amplifiers

I have heard plenty of powerful amplifiers before. I don’t know of any WOPLs nearby to hear. My father-in-law has a ML-1 that I have heard. His system is not optimally set up so I haven’t heard it at it’s full potential. I believe that is only 50wpc despite its dog house size.

    Hi

Well, at least you won’t get banned for it.

    I don’t know. I’ve yet to hear a WOPL.

That’s cool! I guess only visible on the bottom side- I’ve been inside my amps a few times but never the underside of the boards.

    Mostly vinyl…

I’m not sure if I saw that. I don’t think so, but I’ll look for it.

What do you mean? Looking at the traces at certain orientations you see words?

    Mostly vinyl…

Boz and George are mint (still plastic on Boz). Others are ok. Plastic on the CD too. I usually don’t find much here but they had a bunch of cassettes too- nothing I needed however.

Jeff Porcaro on drums. Can’t go wrong. I’m going to try and add a tune to my dead drummers tape…

    Mostly vinyl…

Stopped into the thrift store today. Not bad for eight bucks. I know nothing about the CD, other than being produced by Doyle Bramhall and mastered by Bob Ludwig. I took a chance… but I don’t think it’s possible to suck.

    Rotel RQ-970BX Phono amp

Aragon and Accurus were the work of Mark Levinson (well, his designers) and there is not a whole lot to upgrade inside them. I intended to “improve” my Aragon 47k and the (sparse and massive trace size) board read like a who’s who of boutique parts. The only area of possible improvement is the...

    Alpage AL-300

I have found the same (by ear- no fancy equipment) that the Rega drive belts (which I happen to sell) behave the same way. They need to “run-in” a few hours, perhaps overnight, to give the best representation of their true performance.
