Meet "Val" PL 400 series 1, SN 171xx

Then a 75 watt bulb should be good because if there is a short in the amp, current would be limited to less than an amp. Correct?

Meet "Val" PL 400 series 1, SN 171xx

Sunday's work. BTW, any reason the DBT has to have a 100 watt bulb?

Meet "Val" PL 400 series 1, SN 171xx

Almost ready for power up and testing. Waiting on a heatsink for the triac. Not because it needs it, but for insurance to keep the legs up off the chassis.

Meet "Val" PL 400 series 1, SN 171xx

Those are the ones I've been looking at. Don't really care about the meter, I got 2 flukes.

Meet "Val" PL 400 series 1, SN 171xx

Finished the control board this afternoon. Next step is to route the wiring for the volume controls and meters. Then complete the chassis harness, perform board installs and connections. Gotta build a DBT yet. Considering a cheap variac since I have another 400 to rebuild. Hope I don't let the...

Hi Don, is your triac mod compatible with the PL-400 and if so, how do I get one?

Meet "Val" PL 400 series 1, SN 171xx

Thanks George. I don't think I need the steel wool, but that tooth paste thing is worth trying. Finished modding the faceplate and test fit the gain pots to check clearance. I really like the way this looks. Thinking of adding a power switch. Hoping Don's triac mod becomes available.

I may have asked this before, but what do you use to polish the meter face?

Meet "Val" PL 400 series 1, SN 171xx

Taking a break from board building. It's hard on the eyes after staring at a computer all day. Worked on the wire harness. Some wires came up short due to some rearrangement of fuse holders. Realized I missed routing output grounds. Haven't come up with the best way to route input coaxes yet...

Meet "Val" PL 400 series 1, SN 171xx

Got more done this week. Getting ready to build the wire harness. I think some of the wires are going to come up short due to repositioning the fuse holders. May have to perform some splicing if not replacement. No other hiccups noted thus far.

Reread the last sentence in my statement you quoted. Therein lies the answer to your question.

I hear what you're saying, and my first PL-400 is not purely original anymore. I did put Don's DCP board in it along with the cap upgrades. Still, it gives me a reference to compare my other amps to and I like it.

Linda - Rode hard and abused

I have PL-400 I'm keeping as original as possible. It was almost perfect when I got it. I replaced the output transistors and upgraded the PS caps, recapped the control board with Nichicon FG caps and replaced the meter board with the WO LED board. Love these amps. IF the transformer is good...

KABOOM for sure. I'm thinking there were 6, 1000uf caps before a cap disintegrated and the fuse blew. Bet that ruined a pair of underwear!!
