Sony seem to quote above average (Dolby=Off) S/N ratio for their machines, which made me wonder if Sony had tweaked their REC pre-emphasis and hence PB de-emphasis curves to 'dampen' tape hiss, thus increasing overall S/N? That TC-K80II looks intriguing, and with direct drive to boot! Looking...

In my opinion, it's very difficult to be totally objective when comparing, subliminal preferences lean us towards one deck over the other. A true 'human' comparison would require a true blind test were a third party operator would be doing the A/B switching, and the listener would then have to...

    Tech Recs

@nakdoc: I can't imagine me trying to get through 100 units to repair, let alone 33! That's quite a backlog, I hope you weren't overly stressed in reaching your deadlines. Crickey, and I thought I had amassed a collection of various HiFi and other electronic stuff! :D Good luck with your A700...

In Appreciation For The Lowly 482Z

Given the advances in tape technology from say mid-late 1950s to c2000, I suspect that REC pre-emphasis and thus PB de-emphasis curve (and related corner frequencies/time constants) would be a bit different? It's strange isn't it, that the evolutionary direction of something may not always...

The Dragon is an awesome pice of kit, but it doesn't do much for me. For many it is a status symbol. I also don't like a deck with lots of plastic, and I also don't take to decks with lots ICs. Yes indeed I know it saves space, but what happens when one of the (hard to source) ICs fail? Which...

Nakamichi studied and pushed the small format to its limits, much credit to them.

    Cassette lovers; why?

Which is exactly what I do. BTW, my interest in R2R and cassette goes back to possibly the late 1960s, and cassette in particular from about 1973 when Dad bought me the Sanyo M2000 mono cassette player. Back then I would send off for brochures from Sony/TEAC/TDK etc - it fuelled my imagination...

    Cassette lovers; why?

Just airing some not unrelated thoughts ... Back in 1963 the cassette was never intended to be a HiFi medium, and if it were, then I would suspect that the design would have been more 'robust', and possibly allowing for 1/2 track versions with provision for playing 1/4 track recordings in mono...

I got 'hum' of a sort too, but shielding the LED display circuit board (returning a EMI shield that was there originally), and moving the Rec/PB cables around above the main board sorted the problem. Press PLAY with no tape in, and see if it's PB noise first.

I found when putting the supply pinch arm back, that I put it back incorrectly - it's easy to do this, and the gliding head assembly can be bent a bit if not careful when screwing in. Look at the arm itself and see that when it's back in proper, it should clear everything - before PLAY and...

I'm not sure what you know and don't know, but I'll put some input in anyway. ;o) Apologies too, if I've misunderstood your problem, online comms is often full of mismatching of ideads etc. Okay, so ... the supply pinch roller and its associated nut: the turning of the nut determines where...

When I got the deck in May this year, it was completely broken, but the very first thing I did was to run my finger across the F&F heads. Not the slightest sign of wear! I can't tell you how patient I've been with this machine, it was the only way forward, win or lose. In the end, I seem to...

TESTING TESTING: With everything aligned, and fingers crossed I checked out these https://fixyouraudio.com rollers ... The quoted SM specs for wow/flutter was 0.04% WRMS, so at a mean value of around 0.042% ... 0.043%, that's good enough for me! The belts were 'DeckTech' labelled. I know...

    Sleepy Joe

I do respect other people's political views, but what does annoy me is this - blind tribal loyalty. Voting for the same old party, because their father did, and his father did too etc. I have to say that I have changed my politics over the past 45 years, although I'm not gonna say much, cos' I...

Here in the UK, the 'elected' Government of Labour got about 33% of the vote share, BUT only with 60% turnout - one of the lowest turnouts since records began. To think 40% of the eligible public did not vote!? WTF is wrong with people???

To get that supply guide 'spot on' you'll need a 'cut out cassette'. During PLAY, I could raise and lower the said guide with my finger nail. The objective is to make sure that the guide walls do not catch the edges of the tape. It's a game of trial and error, but you'll get there. A good...

Although this is a nice machine, there's a degree of cost cutting involved. As I've said before - no provision for variable pinch roller pressure.

Take care when returning the pinch assembly nut, it's easy to incorrectly fit the supply pinch roller assembly and accidentally press down on the REC/PB head sliding mech. Clearance is a must. BTW, I forgot to upload this pic, not that it makes any difference.
