My Phase Linear 5100 weirds out on the right channel a-lot these day's. Some times just turning it off and back on brings
the right channel back in. Right side sounds slightly lower in volume on a constant basis. Sounds great other than that.
I'm thinking a recap of the sort is in order, not sure. Looks like some caps leaking, or could be some glue. I know of no one
to send it too for repair. Any suggestions would be helpful.

The power supply issue with the 5100 is a common problem associated with faulty/cracked solder joints on the voltage regulator located on a vertical heat-sink next to a electrolytic capacitor. The glue is the brown stuff that the Japanese (i.e. Pioneer, etc.) liked to use. The 5100 is actually a Pioneer TX-D1000. The lower volume issue is more than likely associated with the PA1001 I.C.

So, a power supply rebuild and replace the PA1001a I.C would be a good idea on this one. Re-solder all the solder joints, and
finding a PA1001 I.C.

I was hoping markthefixer would jump in here. The 1001's are pretty damn scarce and IIRC mark was doing a workaround on it....

At that price, you better hope your troubleshooting is spot on and using the shotgun approach is not recommended.

Start with a recap and the solder joint work. Save the"chucking of parts at it" for future endeavors if the recap/resolder doesn't fix the issues.

I have several of the Pioneer TX-D1000's and Phase Linear 5100's. The one I used as a daily driver one day suddenly had a weaker output in one channel. I asked Dean what the problem could be and he pointed me in the direction of the PA1001 or possibly the PA1002. I moved to Connecticut shortly thereafter and it is still in a box. I have another unit which will become a parts unit when and if I have the time to troubleshoot further.

My current bet is more likely on the PA1002 (AF Amp Muting IC) and not the PA1001 (Pilot Canceller MPX Decoder). It was my intent to try both of them and see which one works.

I plan to do some recapping around the power supply, I did a lot of re-soldering around the power supply and the PA1001A IC. Seemed to help a little, but the right channel still fades out at times. I turn the power off and back on comes right back in. Sometimes for an hour or two, sometimes for just fifteen minutes. May be I should re solder around the PA1002A IC as well. AK Forums mention a KB4438 IC

Look at pin 3 and 14 of the PA1002 with your oscilloscope when it is fading out an determine if you can see the fade at this point or not. If you cannot, it points to the PA1002 being defective. If you can see the fade here then it points to the PA1001 being complicit.
